« BACK TO DICTIONARY INDEX

(n., adj.) A local area network (LAN) configured in a ring, around which a token (or a special signal) is passed between terminals over a single channel. The floating message, or the token, gives each terminal permission to transmit data. A Multistation Access Unit (MSAU) controls the passage of data around the ring at speeds of up to 16 megabits per second (Mbps). IBM developed this network structure, the IEEE 802.5 standard
