variable bit-rate encoding [VBR]

« BACK TO DICTIONARY INDEX

(n.) A twopass process of analyzing and then compressing movies to achieve an optimal data rate for each portion of the movie. It produces movies with data rates that vary from moment to moment, rather than adhering to a uniform, flat data rate. It works by analyzing the complexity of the passage and assigning different amounts of bits accordingly (more bits for complex passages, fewer bits for simple passages). It can radically improve the quality of the compressed video and can ensure the smallest file size with the best results.
