video compression

« BACK TO DICTIONARY INDEX

(n.) Data reduction in digital files that represent sequences of images. The reduction applies the concept that there are usually minor changes from one frame to the next. The differences in content between frames are encoded in the interframe coding technique, and content that is similar between frames is discarded. Another method of reducing file size in video compression is intraframe coding, in which data that defines an individual frame is reduced using discrete cosine transform (DCT). MPEG is a video compression format, as is the H.261 standard.
