wide area network [WAN]

(pronounced “WAN”) (n.) The integration of geographically distant or technologically incompatible local area networks (LANs). Technologies that contribute to the existence of these networks include Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), ISDN, CCITT X.25, and frame relay. See also local area network.
