« BACK TO DICTIONARY INDEX

(n.) A distributed information retrieval system that operates over the Internet in a client-server environment. The web was developed by Tim Berners-Lee at the CERN High-Energy Physics Laboratories in Geneva, Switzerland. Hypertext links refer to HTML documents via a URL, which may refer to local or remote resources. These resources are accessible through FTP, gopher, Telnet, or news, as well as through the HTTP protocol used to transfer hypertext documents. A client program, or a browser, follows a link or sends a query to a server. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is the primary standards body for the web.
