Twelve-tone music

« BACK TO DICTIONARY INDEX

A method of composing music established in the early 20th century that involves using a series of all twelve pitch classes in an ordered tone row, typically without repetition before the series is completed. Four forms of the row are used: the Prime, Inversion, Retrograde, and Retrograde Inversion, transposed to any pitch level. Arnold Schoenberg wrote the first serial compositions in 1923.
