« BACK TO DICTIONARY INDEX

Popular in the Classical period, this is a structural form that evolved over centuries and has been used extensively for the first movement in multi-movement compositions. The three sections of a sonata form are the Exposition with contrasting themes, the Development where the themes are exploited in different key areas, and the Recapitulation where the original materials are all stated in the tonic key. Also known as sonata-allegro.
