Ethernet address

« BACK TO DICTIONARY INDEX

(n.) The identifying hexadecimal number for an individual Ethernet controller board. It is a 48-bit number (aabbccddeeff) in which the first 24 bits (aabbcc) identify the manufacturer of the controller. Most addresses may be changed with software commands, although some are hard-wired on the controller or stored in ROM. The six hexadecimal numbers are normally written in pairs with a colon between each pair, as in 06:00:20:05:44:DC. Also known as a MAC address.
