Inverted interval

« BACK TO DICTIONARY INDEX

An interval with the same pitches as the original, but with the bottom pitch on top and the upper pitch below. To invert an interval, subtract its number from 9 and reverse the quality. For example, a minor 3rd inverted becomes a major 6th, and a major 7th inverted is a minor 2nd. Perfect intervals do not change quality, but augmented intervals become diminished and vice versa.
